How long does a CBCT scan take?

During a CBCT scan, the imaging machine rotates entirely around the patient's head. In less than a minute, about 150-200 images are captured from a variety of angles and compiled into a single 3D image. CBCT scans are quick and in most cases, a full mouth scan only takes about 20-40 seconds.

Does CBCT show inflammation?

Yes, a CBCT (cone beam computed tomography) scan will show inflammation since it provides high-quality, precise 3-D images of your soft tissues, allowing the inflammation to be seen better than it would be on a traditional X-ray.

Can CBCT detect cracked tooth?

Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been widely used in diagnosis of vertical root fractures (VRFs) in recent years. According to the American Association of Endodontists (AAE) classification, there are five types of cracked teeth and VRF is one of them.

Can CBCT detect nerve damage?

Maxillofacial trauma results in nerve injury and impaired neurosensory function. Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) can accurately visualize the course of the mandibular nerve, and this provides additional information to surgeons regarding the incidence of nerve injury.

Is CBCT required for root canal?

Most clinicians agree that it is advantageous and in some instances essential to take a CBCT scan before any endodontic surgery. Precise imaging becomes especially important in surgical cases that might involve vulnerable structures, including sinus cavities, nerve channels or blood vessels.

Does CBCT show sinuses?

With a CBCT scanner, our allergists are able to see the sinuses located under the eyes, above the eyes, between the eyes, and behind the eyes. If your sinuses are unhealthy, the scan will show dark areas around your sinuses. The scan can also show if you have nasal polyps or sinus cysts.

What is the main advantage of using CBCT in dentistry?

Compared to traditional 2D X-rays, CBCT scans offer a much more comprehensive view of your dental anatomy. We can identify issues that may not be visible with conventional X-rays, such as hidden infections, impacted teeth, and abnormalities in your bone structure.

Does CBCT show infection?

Can a CBCT scan show if an infection has spread? Yes. While x-rays can show infection, a CBCT scan will be able to show whether that infection has spread. It can even look further than just the tooth, allowing the endodontist to assess whether the infection has spread more, such as into the neck.

Does CBCT have a lot of radiation?

The average effective radiation dose for a CBCT corresponding to a small FOV is 34µSv, medium FOV is 88µSv, and a large FOV is 131µSv with the medium and large FOVs showing the largest variability of doses (Pauwels et al, 2012).

Why would you need a CBCT scan?

Today, CBCT scans let your endodontist identify if you have periodontal infections, growths, fractures, root or pulp problems, bone loss, or tooth decay. While traditional X-rays can offer a two-dimensional image, they may fail to reveal hidden details, especially when dealing with intricate root canal anatomy.

Can CBCT detect cavities?

CBCT has many advantages that aid in dental caries detection. The high accuracy of this technology allows for the detection of small cavities.
